Today is Memorial Day. Although two days on the official holiday calendar are offered for those who served, today is the one that matters most. Today I remember those I served with who I'll always remember as young because I am unable to remember them other than as the last time I saw them.

I also remember my family members who served and died leaving no young 'uns so there is no one to remember them as grandfathers or great grandfathers. Like my Uncle Ernest, who I never met, who died at Leyte Gulf and is now part of the Pacific Ocean and my Uncle Frank whose last "Semper Fi" was in a letter mailed from Korea. I know their features only from photos. But I know them from serving with men like them.

Guys like O.B. (the medic who didn't get to become one), Fat Kenny (whose X-rays could be taken by holding a light bulb behind him), and Alphabet (whose Polish father fought German & Russians in 1939 and whose family business was "fighting Commies"). They are gone and life goes on, but life would not be the same had they and many others like them not been there to stand in the way of evil.
