Over the last couple of years, I have taken on the task of being a "Mystery Shopper". I have done somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 shops. I've done restaurants, convenience stores, Radio Shack, tire sales, Aeropostle, hair salons, and a tax preparation business. I don't make much money on these assignments, but I get to eat at some nice steak houses, and earn a little extra spending money.
Ok, I hear your question --- What does that have to do with the glass being half full? Well here is what I mean. When I do a mystery shop, I must fill out a report, sometimes I have to take pictures, and I am there to be the eyes and ears of the company that hires me to shop. I must report on how individuals perform their job, etc.
While I am always honest with my reports, I would say that at least 80% + of my reports are positive. Even when I have to say something negative I always try to find positives.
A couple of weeks ago I was at a steakhouse on a Friday night, and they were packed. Even calling ahead, there was almost a 2 hour wait (which if I wasn't on a deadline, I wouldn't have gone).
Waiting was not fun, and it would have been easy to get in a very bad mood, but thinking the glass is half full is a decision and I decided to make it a positive. The employees were working as hard and fast as they could. I know because I had plenty of time to watch them. They were as frustrated with the long line as those who were waiting.
Let me wrap this story up --- and if you are saying "it's about time" I understand.
Life has lots of negatives, especially when one focuses on them. However, I challenge you to think of the positives. And I want to remind you that at the end of the Story, we win!!!! Then the glass will be totally full.
